Understanding the Difference in Poverty Rates between the World Bank and BPS
May 3, 2025 | Other Activities
In April 2025, the World Bank through the Macro Poverty Outlook stated that in 2024 more than 60.3 percent of Indonesia's population or equivalent to 171.8 million people live below the poverty line. On the other hand, official data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that Indonesia's poverty rate as of September 2024 was 8.57 percent or around 24.06 million people.
It is important to understand wisely that the two data do not contradict each other. The differences arise due to differences in the poverty line standards used and for different purposes.
