Consumption Patterns and Expenditures: Key Indicators of Economic and Social Conditions
Expenditure and consumption patterns of the population are crucial indicators for assessing a country's socio-economic conditions. They also serve as the basis for policies aimed at ensuring a more equitable distribution of welfare and addressing food security issues.
The March 2024 National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) results show an increase in average monthly per capita expenditure on food commodities, which is higher compared to non-food commodities.
According to Working’s Law, up to a certain limit, an increase in income will be used to fulfill food consumption needs. However, once that threshold is surpassed, people tend to increase their non-food consumption instead.
